Students created their own "leaf man" and picked up fall leaves when they went outside for recess. We discussed describing words.
Students have the opportunity to choose a book buddy during independent reading time. They enjoy reading with their book buddies!
Students enjoy working on their individual I-Ready lessons on the I-Ready computer program for students. They work on reading and math lessons on I-Ready that assigns lessons to them based on their scores on I-Ready assessments done on the computer.
Students were learning about polar bears this week when we read the I-Ready story called "The Polar Bear Son." It is about a lady who adopted a polar bear cub in an Inuit village. Each day this week we discussed Main characters, Beginning events, Middle events, and End events. Students write and draw using details from story evidence about each of those topics. We repeat this process each time we read a new I-Ready book and their work is added to their data notebooks.
Our classroom continues to work on two service projects each year: one project to benefit our school and the other project to benefit the Ronald McDonald House as they help struggling families of hospitalized children. Students are encouraged to send in box tops that can be found on some grocery and household items that are purchased. Our school box tops coordinator submits these to earn money that our school can use to benefit students in many classroom activities. Students are also asked to save the can tabs from soda cans and bring them to school. Mrs. Andrews takes these to the Ronald McDonald House who can submit them for money to help fund their housing and meal services which are provided for families of children who are hospitalized. Two containers can be found on Mrs. Andrews desk in which box tops and can tabs can be deposited at any time. Thanks for your help in supporting these service projects!
Students are working hard to review the writing skills they learned last year. They have also already begun our weekly writing process and are well on their way to being AWESOME first grade writers. On Monday we Think & Talk about a topic with a partner, on Tuesday we draw our response, on Wednesday we write our response, on Thursday we Edit or Check our work, and on Friday we publish and share! Students were excited to share their thoughts on whether they felt sorry for the witch when she got pushed in the oven after we read Hansel and Gretel last week. This week we are reading Miss Nelson. They will be working on a product that shows whether or not they would like to have Miss Nelson or Miss Viola Swamp as their teacher.

Thank you for visiting our First Grade Reading Class Website! Today we completed our second day of school this year! We have been following our new schedule and our first graders have had the opportunity to switch classes for Reading and Math, as well as work with many teachers and instructional support staff. Routines and procedures are our main focus right now. Once we have our routines in place, we can begin assessing and dig in to our first grade curriculum full force. I am excited to see the growth that will be made this year! I have been working to gather technology resource codes that I can share with you soon.
